Mercer Island — Washington

A simple, modern renovation transforms a once-cramped kitchen and family room into bright, open spaces using clean lines, abundant light, and a natural interplay of light and landscape.

THE VISION
This Mercer Island home sat on a beautifully landscaped lot with a sunny terrace and garden — but you’d never know it from inside. The kitchen and family room felt dark, dated, and disconnected from each other and from the outdoors. The homeowners hoped to modernize the layout, simplify the finishes, and create a stronger sense of openness and indoor-outdoor harmony.

THE APPROACH
From the beginning, I knew the kitchen layout needed to be reimagined to improve circulation and functionality. I created a more intuitive plan with clean lines and a bright, open feel. In the family room, I added custom cabinetry to unify the spaces and provide simple, effective storage. Throughout, the palette stays modern and refined, allowing light, landscape, and connection to take center stage.
